Whether you’re ready to cut your dark brown hair into a geometric-inspired fringe or accessorize with a hair clip, bring a taste of the runway to your new autumn wardrobe!

If you’re hoping to use this year’s runway presentations to inspire your next look, here’s a quick handbook of hair trends to get you started on your transformation.

Haircut Trends At New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2020

The Trend: Geometric Bangs
Seen At: PH5
Stylist: Rodney Cutler

Models typically walk in several shows during fashion week (sometimes several shows a day!), so stylists focus their talents on manipulating styles and leave the dramatic haircuts for another day. Leave it to fashion week staple stylist and Redken brand ambassador Rodney Cutler to come up with a quick and easy way to flaunt a killer haircut without cutting any of the models actual hair. His secret? tape-in extensions

Models at the PH5 presentation hit the runway with eye-catching geometric-inspired bangs to perfectly complement the bright colors and patterns of their outfits. While we don’t usually advocate cutting your own bangs, Cutler’s tape-in extensions mean you never have to use shears on your actual hair. If you want to try this look out for yourself, pick up some tape-in extensions and follow the steps below.

For this look, it’s best to start with clean, dry hair. Before you begin styling, prime your strands with a spritz of Redken One United Multi-Benefit Hair Treatment Spray to condition the hair and control frizz and fly-aways. Then, blow-dry the hair with a round brush, moving from the roots to the ends, to achieve a silky finish. While blow-drying, layer in Redken Fashion Work 12 Hairspray to add structure, shine, and smoothness.

“Having a product treatment that adds a little bit of softness just allows the hair to bend—just [a] very simple technique. One of the critical things when you blow-dry hair is that you blow-dry it from root to end because you’re really just trying to work with the cuticle, the growth of the cuticle, and even those simple things make all the difference,” Cutler explained.

To create structured bangs, apply tape-in extensions to the hairline and trim accordingly. Finish by going over the hair with a blow dryer and spritzing with Redken Shine Flash 02for a high-gloss result. Set your look with Redken’s Triple Pure 32,  which provides extra hold without any stiffness.

Hairstyle Trends At New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2020

The Trend: Futuristic Pin Curls
Seen At: Gypsy Sport
Stylist: Evanie Frausto

Despite hitting the runway in bespoke outfits, models walking in the same show almost always wear the same hairstyle. When your brand is as dedicated to individuality as Gypsy Sport is, one hairstyle won’t cut it. Cutler Salon stylist Evanie Frausto and her team worked diligently to ensure each model received a hairstyle as unique as their breathtaking outfits.

“Individuality is really important to Gypsy Sport, so everyone is getting something a bit different and unique,” Frausto explained backstage. “I was inspired by people on holiday, but in a sort of fantasy world, and mixed 1920s styles, like finger waves and pin curls, with futuristic 2020 looks.”

Looking to create an out-of-this-world hairstyle for your next concert outing? These space buns are bound to get you noticed in a crowd.

To begin, prep your clean, dry hair with Redken Hardwear 16. Using a fine-tooth comb, create a shallow center part. Then, starting above the ear, create a zig-zag part down the back of the head until you reach the neck. Working with one side at a time, gather your hair into two high ponytails and secure with an elastic. Twist each ponytail into space buns and secure with bobby pins. Set your look in place with Redken Triple Pure 32.

The Trend: The French-est Of Twists
Seen At: Taoray Wang
Stylist: Rodney Cutler

If you’re looking for a runway style that you can wear to work and date night, look no further than this romantic twist that hit the runway at the Taoray Wang presentation. Backstage, Cutler revealed what inspired the glamorous style.

“The inspiration for this look is quite romantic and reminiscent of the hairstyles you would see in a classic French movie, but with a modern twist,” he explained. “The clothes in the collection are really beautiful, so we created a classic shape with a bit of a punk flair to keep the hair modern and fresh.”

Hoping to slay this style on your next blind date? Follow these simple steps, and you’ll be ready in no time.

To begin, prep your clean, dry hair by working Redken Guts 10 from root to end for added texture and volume. Then, blow-dry your hair with a small round brush. Next, use a 1-inch Marcel iron to curl 1-inch sections of the hair and once complete, run your fingers through your curls to loosen. Mist your roots with Redken Triple Pure 32 and backcomb to create texture.

Create a deep side part and start rolling the hair from left to right, so it is shallow on the left and deep on the right. As you roll, create depth and imperfections along the way by pinching the hair and creating little gaps and loops. Secure the twist with several bobby pins. Set your look in place by misting with Redken Triple Pure 32 for high-hold, without any crunchiness.

The Trend: Individuality!
Seen At: Claudia Li
Stylist: Rodney Cutler

When it came to Claudia Li’s presentation, lead Rodney Cutler had only one word in mind: individuality. In the most millennial of moves, he assigned every model their own style, working to emphasize the natural texture each head of hair already possessed.

“What Claudia and I wanted to do is really play up everyone’s authentic style and celebrate uniqueness. We worked with the natural texture of the hair for a lived-in look that we’re calling second or third-day hair. We also mixed in chunky side braids and rope braid chignons to complement the different pieces in the collection,” he explained.

While every look was a little different, lived-in texture is easy to achieve! Cutler started with a base layer of Redken One United Multi-Benefit Hair Treatment Spray before massaging in Dry Shampoo Paste 05 for added lift and volume. He cocktailed Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame and All Soft Argan-6 Oil for smoothness with a little punch of texture. As a final step, spritz on Triple Pure 32 as needed.

Hair Accessory Trends At New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2020

The Trend: Leading Lady Hair Scarves
Seen At: L’Agence
Stylist: Rudy Martins

At the L’Agence Spring/Summer 2020 Show on September 5, the French fashion brand paid homage to a certain widely popular beachside town in the French Riviera. Rudy Martins, Cutler Salon hair lead and the mane master behind the show’s hairstyles, described Saint Tropez as his ultimate inspiration.

“The collection is inspired by the 1960s European coastal vibe, particularly the south of France. The hair look is all about the very chic woman that’s driving in a convertible, with a hair scarf on to protect her hair from the wind,” Martins says. “The hair is very chic, and underneath, the woman is very chic.”

The sleek ponytails, low buns, and silk hair scarves were the perfect fit for the cool-meets-casual collection full of fun prints, casual dresses, and trendy business suits.

“The brand and I worked together to find a compromise between the sophisticated and casual looks a woman could have... it’s almost a Thelma and Louise kind of vibe,” Martins explained.

Martins used some of his favorite Redken styling products to create the various sleek hairstyles. He began by prepping the hair with the Redken Full Frame 07 All-Over Volumizing Mousse.

“We use hair mousse to make sure we have good control on the hair before we style and to help get rid of any flyaways,” Martins says.

Then, he used Redken Fashion Work 12 for working, shaping, and finishing the styles. To give the hairstyles a shiny, healthy-looking finish, he completed the looks with a few spritzes of the Redken Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist. The fine-mist aerosol shine spray providing hair with a high shine finish and silky feel.

The Trend: Candy-Colored Hair Combs
Seen At: Tory Burch
Stylist: Guido Palau

New York Fashion Week is the perfect time for some of our favorite blast-from-the-past hair accessories to reclaim their place on our vanity. This year, Redken global director Guido Palau brought back the minimalist accessory of our dreams: the hair comb. Colored hair combs, much like the ones you used to steal from your mother’s vanity, were the perfect hair accessory for the Tory Burch runway.

“The hair at Tory Burch is simultaneously a nod to the ’40s and '80s at the same time...even though it’s an American designer, it reminds me of a well-heeled English woman who would groom her hair every morning,” Palau said of his inspiration. “This look is a fun, boyish spin on that while still being very feminine and proper.”

Hoping to add this look to your styling arsenal? Continue reading to find out how.

For this look, Palau recommends beginning by washing the hair with Redken Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner. Then, apply a quarter-sized amount of RedkenExtreme Play Safe, which protects from heat styling up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, to the lengths and ends of your towel-dried hair. Use a round brush to blow-dry the front of your hair back so that it is smooth. If your hair is curly, use a diffuser to dry the lengths to maintain some natural texture. If it is straight, continue blow-drying your entire head with the round brush.

Once your hair is fully dry, create a side part using a fine-toothed comb. Using your fingers, square off your hairline in the front. Comb the front side of your hair from the non-dominant part back directly back over your ear and secure with a decorative clip or barrette. Pull your hair from the dominant side part back over your ear using a fine-toothed comb and slightly twist, securing with a similar decorative clip or barrette. Tousle the front with your fingertips to create a vintage, full effect. Lock your look in place with a spritz of Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray for high hold without crunch that lasts all day.
