Just six years ago, hairstylist Getaun Alexander had no plans to open up a salon. Fast forward to today, however, the Mizani brand ambassador is the proud owner of M'Bellish Hair Studio—one of Chicago’s go-to salons for textured hair. Whether you’re looking for a quality cut or full head of extensions, M'Bellish Hair Studio has it all.
“I’ve been in the industry for 19 years...so I’ve had a lot of experience with many different types of places,” Alexander says. “None of them really met what I felt were my standards as far as customer service as well as building a team environment. My goal was to try to build more of that as well as give our clients the best possible service.”
Friends soon convinced Alexander to open a small salon, where she worked by herself for only six months before quickly expanding.
“My plan was to work there with just myself and maybe an assistant...Then I started meeting people along the way that when I started giving my vision for the future for what I wanted to do, they wanted to come on board,” Alexander says.
The three-station space quickly turned into a seven-chair salon with seven stylists and estheticians. Since its opening in March of 2012, M’Bellish has prided itself on being an inclusive salon that’s welcoming to anyone that walks through the door. How the client feels once they leave, Alexander says, is what’s most important to her and her stylists.
“If you really want to come somewhere where you’re going to get amazing service and looks that are going to cater to your lifestyle, then our salons is the place for that type of person,” Alexander says. “Someone who really prides themselves in how they look after they leave the salon. I’m really big on that.”
“Most of our clientele are girls that have naturally curly hair that wear their hair straight or with extensions...and then we also do a lot of curly, natural haircuts,” Alexander says.
As a full-service salon, M'Bellish Hair Studio has everything from relaxers and keratin treatments to eyelash extensions and makeup application. Alexander’s vision for the salon was simple: to have a place clients could go for all of their beauty needs.
“It’s kind of like a one-stop for everything your client needs...that was my goal,” Alexander says. “If I couldn’t do something for my client, I wanted to make sure I have someone in my salon that I can refer them to.”
M'Bellish Hair Studio offers a variety of services including precision cuts ($85), shampoo and style ($55), full sew in extensions ($200), loc maintenance ($60), and permanent color ($80).
When asked about the salon’s best-selling product, however, Alexander says Mizani 25 Miracle Milk is the clear winner.
“All of the stylists do different things, but that’s the product that across the board all of our clients can use,” Alexander explains.
The Brand
Though Alexander had dreams of one day owning a salon, she always thought she would wait until she retired from her work behind the chair. After years of working in several different salon environments, however, she felt something was missing from the salon industry.“I’ve been in the industry for 19 years...so I’ve had a lot of experience with many different types of places,” Alexander says. “None of them really met what I felt were my standards as far as customer service as well as building a team environment.
