Spring has sprung, and with a new season comes new hair trends that we’re excited to tell you all about—no gatekeeping here! This season is rich in curly hairstyles and haircuts, so much so that we decided to create a roundup specifically for our curly-haired friends. “This spring's trends are all about texture,” says curl specialist and Mizani artist Carla Marcelle.
We tapped the Cleveland, Ohio-based stylist to fill us in on everything going on in curl world right now, and she didn’t disappoint. Think: Extra, while still being low-maintenance! Not to mention, these trends work for multiple curl types and patterns. Below, Marcelle gives us her predictions on what you can expect to see on your feed and in IRL this spring when it comes to curls.

Curly Shag
“Let's not forget what's been dominating the trends for a while now, and that's the curly shag,” says Marcelle. Shag has indeed been on our radar for a couple of seasons now, but we can’t get enough of this unviersally flattering cut. Pick up L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Curl Expression 10-In1 Cream-In-Mousse to give your shag body without crunch.
Already have a shaggy cut, and wondering how to spice it up? “They're going to be using subtle highlights (aka clouding), soft blondes, bronzes, and brown—all of those colors to just give the hair a pop,” Marcelle adds. We love Redken Shades EQ Gloss to quickly and effectively tone and add shine. The 20-minute color service available in salons comes in a multitude of colors, but our season favorite has been Gold Rose for a perfectly executed Champagne Blonde.
Curly Bangs
We can’t think of a better way to accentuate your shag than bangs—the two just work together effortlessly! “We're rolling full fledge into the ‘80s, baby!” says Marcelle. “That heavy, curly fringe is here, and it is back.” If your’re looking for a complete mane makeover this spring, curly bangs will do the trick everytime.
Lean into your curl type by using Mizani Style Shifter Society Coco Dew Pre-Styling & Restyling Spray to add definition and an extra spring to your bangs.
Curly Extensions
“Want to know how people are given their shags an extra pop of volume? Extensions!” says Marcelle. “People all over the world are getting into curly assets and accessories to amp [things up].” This trend is ideal for the curl queen or king who like to switch things up often.
Don’t know where to start when it comes to curly extensions? Check out our guide here. And note, that just because you’re adding extensions doesn’t mean you stop caring for your own curls. Before styling, prep your hair with curl-enhancing products like those in the Matrix A Curl Can Dream Shampoo For Curly And Coily Hair Deep Clean Bundle. If your extensions are made with human hair, washing them with the same products you use to prep your natural hair is generally safe, but always be sure to read the care instructions.
Mizani Air Cut
Marcelle leaves us with one last trend that’s been the secret to the curly-haired ‘dos we’re seeing lately—the Mizani Air Cut. “This is a solution-seeking systematic way of cutting customized for your specific curls,” she explains. “It takes your unique texture into consideration.”
There’s a lot of misinformation floating around when it comes to cutting textured hair, and this professional salon cut takes the guesswork out—the end result is a style that’s all your own. Once you find a salon that offers the Mizani Air Cut, compliment your cut with the brand’s best-selling leave-in conditioner Mizani 25 Miracle Milk.
